Campus
BIS rests on a beautiful, generous campus located in a green suburb of the City of Bonn.
Our geographic neighbors include the Rhine River, a residential area under historic preservation protection, and the city's largest recreational park. The setting brings to life the rich natural and cultural traditions of Germany and wider Europe.
It is also an ideal, safe environment for children.
Where we learn
The Waves building is the heart of our Primary School, containing most of the classrooms for Early Learning to Grade 5 students. This colorful, distinctive building also houses our 40,000 volume Media Center, well-resourced science laboratories, Design and Product workshops and a sports hall. Our cafeteria is located in the centre of Waves, offering warm lunches and snacks prepared on-site.
The Agora and Crest buildings are home to Secondary students and their studies. In addition to 40 light-filled, modern classrooms, these buildings contain music rooms, art studios and a kiln, a learning support suite, competitive sports facility, exam rooms and a senior lounge. The Agora is known for the flags celebrating the nationalities of each country represented in our student body.
An extensive IT infrastructure supports our technology and research curriculum. Age-appropriate playgrounds give our students plenty of space to run and play.
Easy to reach
BIS is easily accessible on public transportation or by car, bike, or foot. Extensive bike and walking paths connect BIS to all areas of Bonn. Local buses stop only a few minutes walk from our school entrance and connect with Bonn's main stations. Tram stops are about 10 - 15 minutes from school.
Top campus surprises
- Most of our students live within a 3 kilometer radius of BIS and either walk or ride their bikes to school. Half of our car park has been redesignated to accommodate a growing number of cyclists.
- More than 20% of our electricity consumption is generated by solar panels.
- BIS sits next to Bonn's largest park of more than 300 acres and directly across the river from Bonn's Seven Hills, the site of the Dragon Castle and other famous ruins.
- Our campus measures 32,470 square meters, averaging 46 square meters per student to learn, play and run around.
- BIS facilities are open until 21:00 so that parents and staff members can play sports after work through our sports association.
- Our on-site caterer cooks more than 400 fresh lunches on site per day during school term.
The Agora building is the heart of our Secondary School. Specialist music and arts rooms, as well as classrooms for the Humanities and English are found in this building. This is also where we welcome special guests like Federal President Steinmeier.
We love our riverside location and green surroundings. Bonn's Seven Hills, better known as the Siebengebirge, are just across the river.
Right next to our campus are generous playing fields where our football and cricket teams practice and play their competitive games. We also use these fields for sports days and special events.
Lunchtime is busy in the cafeteria, with students enjoying either a hot lunch purchased on-site or bringing their own. A kiosk sells snacks during morning break. Our cafeteria transforms into a fantastic party location for many a school party.
40,000 print and e-books, 400 subscriptions and access to many databases -- our Media Centre has a wealth of resources for students. Primary students enjoy regular weekly visits while Secondary students hone their research and analytical skills during their Media Centre time.
The majority of our students live within walking or biking proximity to the school. This is convenient for morning arrival and for attending after-school activities and sports.
BIS is a tech-savvy school, where even our youngest learners become proficient in the responsible use of technology. All Primary students use iPads in school, while students in Grades 6 -7 have iPads which they may take home for school work. Students Grades 8 - 12 bring their own laptops to school as their skills and the demands of their work increase.
Our Science corridor has five laboratories where our Integrated Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics students can experiment and apply theory to real life. Our Sports Science lab is located further down the hallway in our Crest building.
This is part of our Early Learning playground area, where EL kids have plenty of space to run, jump and play. We also have playground areas separate and specifically for our Primary or Secondary School students.
Design is a mandatory class in Grades 6 - 8 and a very popular elective class in Grades 9 - 10. The Design lab is where our students learn to use basic equipment as such saws and hammers, as more advanced equipment like 3-D printers and CAD drawing.
Primary School classrooms are bright and full of resources. They are located in our Waves building in their own special area, next to playgrounds and not far from the Media Centre, cafeteria or Nurse's Office.
Volleyball, basketball, floorball, dance and much more -- our two competition-sized Sports Halls are full of action during school and into the evening hours.
Our Crest building is home to Secondary Maths, Sciences, Languages and our Learning Support Suite. Much to the joy of our Diploma students, there is also a senior lounge and exam room for their exclusive use.
