English Language Acquisition (EnLA)
The English Language Acquisition (EnLA) Program at Bonn International School helps students develop the language skills needed to participate in the mainstream classroom. When students join the school, EnLA teachers assess students’ needs in order to determine the type and level of support required.
The EnLA program at BIS aims to help students develop the language skills needed to participate in the mainstream classroom at their grade level. When students join the school, EnLA teachers assess their needs in order to determine the type and level of support required.
EnLA pull-out classes are for beginner and some intermediate level students, and they are scheduled during homeroom language time. Emphasis is placed on communicative, task-based activities designed to encourage oral communication and allow students to gain language skills and confidence.
EnLA teachers continually monitor students’ progress in consultation with the homeroom teacher. When students are assessed at a “developing” level of English proficiency (based on a standard set of criteria), they will exit EnLA pull-out classes and continue to receive in-class support as needed. The purpose of EnLA in-class support is to help students acquire deeper understandings and master the complexities of “academic” language in the classroom, while allowing opportunity for more peer interaction. This type of support will vary in different classes but will include small group work, shared teaching and/or one-on-one support, using an inquiry-based approach.

For students who are not used to using English as their primary language of learning and/or who are in the process of acquiring academic English, the Secondary School offers two programs depending on what level of language support is required.
In Grade 6, 7 and 8 students are offered an MYP English Language Acquisition course as an alternative to MYP English Language and Literature. Students needing extra English language support will be able to access this during Individuals and Societies lessons. Students may transfer to the English Language and Literature course, although Language Acquisition also has a pathway right through the MYP and Diploma Programme.
Currently, Grade 9 and 10 students receive language support through an English as an Additional Language (EAL) program, which supplements their MYP Language A English course. They can also access an intensive EAL program as an alternative to German. Both Grade 9 and 10 programs are designed to ensure that students, whose primary language is not English, are well prepared to take on the linguistic challenges of the IB Diploma.
