Early Learning: Age 3-5

The Early Learning (EL) section of Bonn International School is designed for 3 - 5 year old children. Conducted in English, the programme is an integral part of the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB).

Our EL offers students a warm environment in which they are stimulated to make their own discoveries about the world around them. Classes have low student-teacher ratios and the additional support of a teaching assistant. Classes follow a structured curriculum with clearly defined learning objectives.

Through structured play and activities we focus on

  • Language development (listening to stories, reading books together, sharing experiences from home, joining in with rhymes and songs)
  • Social development (playing together, solving problems, developing self-confidence, self-management and organisation skills, understanding and following daily routines)
  • Mathematical development (counting, sorting, comparing, data handling, number recognition, shape and space, pattern)
  • Fine and Gross Motor development (music and movement, physical education)
  • Artistic development (Arts, Craft, Music, Drama)

We nurture the children's natural curiosity. We at BIS believe that inquiry is a powerful tool to learn about their environment. In all our activities we acknowledge differences in developmental stage, as well as cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Learning in an international environment, with many different nationalities represented, offers a positive experience to all the children.

Practical Information:

  • Separate classes are offered for children age 3-4 (EL3/4) and 5 year olds (EL5).
  • Classes are taught in English with additional language support for students whose first language is not English.
  • Parents are regularly informed about the development of their children and encouraged to be active participants in the school community.
  • EL 5 is a full-day programmed ending at 15:20. Both half- (until 12:00) and full-day (until 15:00) places are available in EL3/4.
  • September 1 is the date determining the admission to EL programmes.
  • Children must be toilet-trained before they can enter EL programmes.
Part of learning is being out of school
EL children enjoy lots of activity and movement
Free play is also part of EL life
