Social Responsibility

Bonn International School seeks to develop the head, heart and hand of its students. This means that emotional development and inter-personal understanding are just as important as academic strength. As such, students and the wider BIS community are encouraged to demonstrate social responsibility and awareness in all they do.

Through IB programmes and the IB Learner Profile, the idea of social responsibility is thread throughout the curriculum and teaching in all grade levels, starting with Early Learning. Service projects, fundraisers, and awareness campaigns are an essential part of the school. Indeed, in the Secondary School throughout the school year, Grade 6-10 students participate in a Community and Service Programme while Grade 11-12 students are actively engaged in the Creativity, Action and Service Programme. Within both programmes, individual or groups of students identify, plan and implement meaningful projects investing their own time and skills for the benefit of others.

Below is a sample of a few of the community support activities that BIS has actively contributed to during the course of the 2009-2010 school year:

  • Students have demonstrated their musical skills for the International Paralympic Committee, Beethovenfest and the Mayor's Farewell event;
  • World Aids Day, World Peace Day and Banned Books Day were promoted and celebrated;
  • Nearly 300 coats and winter accessories were collected and donated to a local children's home;
  • 405 students were housed by the BIS families for 9 events for a total of 780 nights;
  • 1366 Euros was raised for the Planet Protectors new butterfly garden;
  • Hundreds of signatures were collected in support of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change on Copenhagen;
  • Over 90 shoeboxes were filled with children's goodies and were distributed to local children's homes.
  • Net Foundation has been selected as the Student Council Charity of the Year. Plans to raise awareness and funds for this African based charity throughout the year are underway.
