The Agora building from the south side
The Agora interior view

BIS is presently home to over 690 students from 60 countries and serves families from more than 100 regional institutions and businesses. The school’s current facilities opened in January 2006 and were originally designed for 580 students. At the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, BIS enrolment stood at 620. At the beginning of this school year, enrolment stood at 660. Projections by the City of Bonn and external consultants forecast consistent demand for at least 800 student places over the next years. Mobile classrooms and lengthy waiting lists are already a temporary and insufficient answer to long-term demand for these places.

Architectural plans have been developed for additional facilities appropriate to the educational programming for a school of over 800 students. A new building, named the Agora building for its interior atrium design, will provide needed classrooms, a double sports hall and serve as a separate campus for Secondary students. Plans for the restoration of the American Club, a much-loved landmark building, during a second building phase include an auditorium, music practice rooms and additional cafeteria facilities. Groundbreaking for the Agora building took place in June 2011 and construction started in July 2011. As of January 2012, the project is running on time and the Agora building will become the heart of the Secondary School in August 2012.

When finished, the additional Bonn International School facilities (including the Agora and American Club buildings) will cover ca. 7000 sq. meters on 18,000 sq. meters of land adjacent to its current school grounds. Great care has been taken to ensure that the American Club, a listed historic building famous for its links to Bonn as the former capital of Germany, will be sensitively in corporated into the new school campus.
